Here are some of the books which I have read and enjoyed lately.
The Help by Kathryn Stockett–I resisted it for a long time but finally gave in and found it to be a very interesting read. A little bit of a hatchet job on one of the characters but she did have a redeeming feature.
The Bladerunner by Alan Nourse–this book was written a number of years ago but sounded so timely for its depiction of the medical field. Could have been blurbed as “Ripped from the pages of today’s newspaper.”
Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev. I have been reading her posts on Facebook and finallly got intrigued enough to order the book and am about half way through it. I am finding it very well written and full of interesting characters. I would recommend it highly and am looking forward to the other two books by her: Perchance to Dream and So Silver Bright.
The Sookie Stackhouse Companion by Charlaine Harris. Another book that I had been resisting but bought to get an idea of which books I had not read. Her characters are people that I can relate to. Almost OD on the plot synopses–I would recommend not reading too many of them at a time.

It’s Wednesday and I’m back. A suggestion has been made to blog about the store and the interesting people I have met there. One thing that I learned early on was not only not to judge a book by its cover but also not to judge the buyer either. An early customer was a little biker who was not looking for action books but I think it was”diaper” fiction. I don’t think that I had any so did not get his business.
There was also the old African American lady who loved Mandingo and the other “plantation” books. She assured me that was the way it really was. I always felt slightly embarrassed by selling them to her.
Our first store was in the Sellwood district of Portland OR between a bar and a beauty salon with a machine shop on the other corner. The owner of the machine shop had a little boy about 4 or so (too young for school) who would sometimes come down and hang out with me. One day he said, “If you were a dog, who would you marry?” That left me pretty perplexed until I realized that they were planning on breeding one of their dogs.
It was not only the customers who came up with strange comments. One day an older man who owned another bookstore a few blocks away came in and told me that he never had a cash register. “They can just put it under their arm and walk out with it.” This gave me a good laugh because the one we had at the time took at least 2 people to carry it.
And then there were the writers but that is a story for another day.

Missed posting on Wednesday. We went to the Puyallup Fair. The scones were hot and delicious, the baby pigs were darling, the quilts were breathtaking, the grange displays were outstanding and the Midway was ear-splitting.
Be sure to check my announcements for book bargains. I hope to have them ready weekly. It is beginning to feel like fall. The sun is not quite so hot and there are more clouds. I am knitting along as usual. The trouble is that I have 5 projects going at once so each takes longer than they perhaps should but it keeps me from getting bored with each of them and I swap often enough that I do not forget where I am at the moment.
Lady Jayne is attempting to revive this blog and to keep it up to date weekly (or perhaps weakly). Today I have posted our convention schedule both confirmed and in process. So much depends upon our health and other factors.

Let us know if you are looking for any specific books and we can help you search for them if we do not have them., You can also use the links to our listings on Amazon & Half.Com and order from there. we have over 9000 titles listed between them and more added daily when we are in town.

Also, if you are going to be at a con that we will be at let us know if there is something you would like us to bring with us. Give us at least a week lead time so that we can find the book and pack it.
